What is Hollaback?
A global movement to end street harassment using online and mobile technology.

We believe that everyone has a right to feel safe and confident without being objectified or targeted for their perceived gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, class, or abilities.

Sexual harassment is a gateway crime that creates a cultural environment that makes gender-based violence OK. There exists a clear legal framework to reproach sexual harassment and abuse in the home and at work, but when it comes to the streets it is difficult to respond to. This gap isn’t because street harassment hurts any less, it’s because there has been few consequences or responses. This has to change.  The explosion of mobile technology has given us an unprecedented opportunity to end street harassment—and with it, the opportunity to take on one of the pervasive issues of gender-based violence in our communities.

By collecting stories and pictures in a safe and share-able way, Hollaback! is creating a crowd-sourced initiative to end street harassment. Internationally Hollaback! breaks the silence that has perpetuated sexual violence internationally, asserts that any and all gender-based violence is unacceptable, and creates a world where we have an option—and, more importantly—a response.

Why Alberta?

Hollaback Alberta includes all of the cities, towns, and communities in Alberta. Street harassment is not just exclusive to large cities, but it happens in all public spaces. We want to create a community where people in Alberta have a voice and a place to share their experiences and read others’ stories. Hollaback Alberta is for everyone who wants a response to street harassment and who support those who speak out against it. We want to raise awareness in Alberta and show people affected by street harassment that they are not alone, that their feelings are justified. Hollaback Alberta wants the streets to be safe for everyone because everyone deserves to feel comfortable in their own skin anywhere!
